What are the Benefits of Acupuncture?
Acupuncture is used for pain relief and complements other physiotherapy or podiatry techniques such as joint mobilisation, massage and exercises. It can be used to settle trigger points and reduce muscular tightness. Acupuncture is beneficial for most musculoskeletal conditions, including low back pain, foot pain, neck pain, joint pain and muscle tears.
What are the Risks of Acupuncture?
The risks involving acupuncture are minimal when performed by a trained professional. Occasionally, there may be mild bruising, bleeding or pain. If you are prone to fainting, let your therapist know in advance. The risk of infection is minimised by using single disposable needles and cleaning the skin with alcohol swabs prior to insertion of needles.
It is best to avoid acupuncture if:
• you feel fatigued.
• you feel run down or generally unwell.
• you feel depressed or anxious.
• you have a significant needle phobia.
• there is local infection.
Acupuncture treatment is restricted for pregnant women and patients on anti-coagulant therapy such as Warfarin.
