Medical Board Pre Registration Check
If you have been successful in being tentatively offered a fellowship position for the Sports Surgery & Arthroplasty Fellowship a pre approval registration check needs to be conducted before an official offer is made. The Fellowship Manager is required to submit the following documentation to the Medical Board of SA:-
- Full CV of applicant
- Certified copy of Primary Medical Qualification
- Two written references with whom you have recently worked with (last 2 years)
- Evidence of English
- Certificate of Good Standing (3 months expiry date from issue)
- Competent Authority Model (primary source verification) (www.amc.org.au)

RACS Letter of Endorsement
A letter of endorsement for your visa is required from the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons. The Fellowship Manager will arrange and submit the application on your behalf. This only applies to successful candidates.
Visa Application
Once the letter of endorsement has been received by the Fellowship Manager, an application for Visa Subclass 457 will be made. It is advisable for you to refer to the Department of Immigration website regarding the requirements for this visa.
It is strongly suggested that you commence your application approximately 6-8 months prior to your arrival date.
Applying for this Visa
If the employer and employee are eligible willing and able to meet their obligations under the visa, they can commence the 3-step application process.
Step 1: Employer Applies to be a Sponsor
The employer must complete an application to become a sponsor.
Step 2: Employer Nominates a Position
The employer must nominate the position to be filled.
Step 3:Employee Applies for a Visa
The employee must apply for a visa to be allowed to work in Australia.
Renewing a Visa
Employees who want to renew their visa or change employers must lodge a new visa application. The employer must also lodge a new sponsorship and/or nomination if a valid sponsorship or nomination does not already exist. To renew a visa follow the applicable steps above.
Medical Board of South Australia Registration
You are required to present in person at the Medical Board of SA in order to gain limited or full registration. An updated GMC certificate (dated no less than 3 months from appointment) is required to be sent direct to the Medical Board from the Board you are currently registered with.
Evidence of English and Competent Authority Model (primary source verification) is required to have been submitted and accepted by the Medical Board prior to attending in person. If this has not been done, the Medical Board will not grant you registration. Please ensure that you also bring your original primary medical certificate with you as they Medical Board will need to sight the original. You will also be required to bring your passport showing your Australian Visa to the appointment. Please refer to the Medical Board of SA website regarding conditions of registration as these can change without notice.
Medical Defence
Medical Defence is provided during your employment at SPORTSMED·SA. As part of your induction, you will be required to complete an application form for membership. It is recommended that you suspend your medical defence in your country of origin during your fellowship if you reside outside of Australia. Tax File Number
Upon arrival, you must apply for a tax file number with the Australian Taxation Office (ATO). You can make an appointment for a personal interview at your nearest office by phoning 13 28 61 within Australia. Opening hours are from 8.30am to 4.45pm weekdays.International callers can contact the ATO by phoning 61 2 6216 1111 between 8.00am to 5.00pm (AEST).
There is no charge to obtain a tax file number. Obtaining a tax file number is mandatory to work and earn a salary in Australia. For more information, refer to the ATO website.
