Our history

Orthopaedic surgeon Dr Greg Keene was inspired to build a centre of excellence for the treatment of sport injuries, and approached fellow orthopaedic surgeon Dr Roger Paterson and sports physiotherapist Susan Everett to join him in establishing SPORTSMED·SA. Other sport medicine professionals perceived to be the best in their fields were recruited for their skills, ambition and commitment to the vision.

By Christmas in 1987, the founding principals started to regularly meet to establish the framework for the new clinic. They were Orthopaedics Surgeons Dr Greg Keene, Dr Roger Paterson and Dr Michael Hayes, Sport Doctors Dr Peter Barnes, Dr Mark Fisher, Dr Geoff Graham and Dr Malcolm Grant; Physiotherapists John Camens, Shylie Davidson, Glenn Dods and Susan Everett.

These practitioners were responsible for overseeing design and construction of the building, developing contractual and financial structures and implementing a Marketing and Business Plan for the Clinic.

This plan was radical in that it promoted equality amongst divisions and a system promoting personal incentive in order to create an organisation that could maintain sustainable growth and high standards.

On 22 May 1989, the clinic opened its doors at Stepney to the first patients and the group opened Australia’s first free-standing day surgery in 1990.

In August 1998, SPORTSMED·SA added a further 45-bed inpatient hospital for overnight and longer stay patients at the Stepney site. It was the first purpose built facility in Australia to expedite recovery from sports related and joint surgery, allowing for all services to be conveniently located in one central location. SPORTSMED·SA has led not only in South Australia, but also nationally, providing patients modern hospital care and was the first hospital to provide patients with guaranteed private rooms with ensuite bathrooms.

Over the years SPORTSMED·SA and its hospital have grown. In 2008 the hospital underwent a $4.5 million expansion, which included a new fully-equipped theatre, an increase in bed numbers by 40 per cent in the first-stage recovery area and a 60 per cent increase in chairs in the second-stage recovery.

SPORTSMED·SA has also opened four clinic branches across metropolitan Adelaide (Blackwood, Henley Beach, Kurralta Park and Morphett Vale) and three orthopaedic regional consulting branches at Victor Harbor, Mt Gambier and Darwin allowing patients to access services from a number of convenient locations.

A major expansion of our Stepney site broke ground in December 2016 to transform the location into an innovative and high-quality healthcare hub that offers patients a one-stop location for all their medical needs.

Full radiology services including CT and MRI scanning, a pharmacy, pathology centre and new consulting rooms for the SPORTSMED·SA Medical Division along with a café, will be available to the public in July 2017.
