sportsmed is poised to meet growing demand as it celebrates 30 years since opening as Australia’s first purpose-built orthopaedic hospital at Stepney.

It’s been a natural evolution from our origins as a centre of excellence in sports injuries to now specialise in the prevention, treatment and recovery of bone, joint, muscle, ligament, tendon, nerve and arthritis issues.

With these types of pain, injuries and conditions on the rise as our population ages, our Stepney healthcare hub has expanded so a patient can be diagnosed, treated and managed at one central hub.

After a state of the art $7 million transformation, our Stepney base now offers Orthopaedic Surgeons, Sports Doctors and GPs, Physiotherapy, Podiatry, Massage, Exercise Physiology, Diet and Nutrition, Psychology, Gym, a weekend injury clinic and private hospital.

Additional services include medical imaging, pathology, occupational medicine, pharmacy and cafe.

“Our staff are focused on delivering the best patient care and experience at every step, a motivation that has resulted in a series of achievements and firsts in healthcare,” says sportsmed CEO Hospital and Orthopaedics, Allan Morrison.

Those achievements include:

• Medibank members who had surgery and overnight hospital stay rating sportsmed as Australia’s best private hospital for care, staff and cleanliness (November 2018);

• A range of technological innovations that can improve recovery times for patients undergoing hip arthroscopies and full and partial knee replacements, including becoming the first in South Australia to use the robotic NAVIO Surgical System and Arthrex’s 4K ultra high-definition camera technology, and introducing the Dyonics Plan software to create a 3D rendering of a patient’s hip and knee to inform surgeon’s pre-operative planning;

• Revolutionary education and exercise programs to support patients with arthritic knees and hips;

• Becoming Australia’s first hospital to introduce the BioVigil hand hygiene technology that reduces the spread of hospital-acquired infections, allowing sportsmed to achieve and sustain a 97% hand hygiene rate, well in excess of the industry benchmark of 80%.

“Over the past 30 years we’ve also expanded the sportsmed network to include locations at Morphett Vale, Henley Beach, Blackwood, Victor Harbor, Mount Gambier and Darwin, with a number of our surgeons also visiting other regional areas such as Mildura and Broken Hill,” Mr Morrison said.

“We look forward to continuing to serve the community in the years ahead.”
