sportsmed is proud to be the first hospital in South Australia to implement Arthrex’s 4K ultra high-definition camera technology that can help improve patient outcomes and quality of surgery.

The 4-in-1 system combines the latest technology, 4K camera heads, LED lighting, image management and integration with an intuitive tablet controller that is programmed by our surgeons based on individual surgery and patient requirements. It is the only 4K camera system of its kind on the market in the world.

The increased picture clarity and depth perception, delivered by the leading-edge technology offers superior visuals and enhanced detail that can help our surgeons identify different tissue structures and pathology more accurately, and improve surgical precision.

Some of our surgeons have experienced reduced operating time due to the new camera system. This can decrease the risk of infection and other complications during surgery.

sportsmed Adult and Growing Athlete Surgeon Dr Matthew Hutchinson, who specialises in hip, knee and ankle conditions, was impressed with the positive effect the technology is already having on his operations and patient outcomes.

“The Arthrex 4K system has had an immediate and positive impact upon my ability to treat patients,” Dr Hutchinson said.

“A substantial portion of my patients are young, with smaller joint surfaces that can pose unique challenges for a surgeon. The size and clarity of the Arthrex images has already reduced operative times and improved the accuracy of surgery.

“Most Australian homes have a big screen TV in high definition, why wouldn’t we offer the same or better visual quality to our patients, where literally the difference of a few millimeters can make a huge impact upon a patient’s outcome.”

The system can be used in any surgical procedure requiring arthroscopic imaging and has a number of attachments that provide flexibility for use in any size joint, offering a surgeon a greater level of control and dexterity.

Accompanying the system is Arthrex’s Synergy surgeon iPad application that affords physicians with the tools to manage stills, video recordings and digital format patient education.

The app sets a new standard for patient education and post-operative communication, enabling surgeons to create a report containing the surgery images and post-operative notes ready for immediate distribution.

Supplied by Device Technologies, the Arthrex system follows a number of patient innovations at sportsmed in recent years including the NAVIO Robotic Surgical System for knee surgery and 3D Dyonics planning for hip arthroscopy.

CEO of sportsmed Hospital and Orthopaedics Alan Morrison was delighted to offer another ground-breaking technological advance to patients, which will continue to see the organisation remain at the forefront of surgical innovation and deliver excellence in orthopaedic care.

“We pride ourselves on providing the public with access to state-of-the-art healthcare and we proactively seek out pioneering technology that can benefit both our practitioners and patients,” Morrison said.

“Early reports from our surgeons have suggested the Arthrex system is adjusting their surgical approaches and techniques for the better, which in turn is producing highly successful patient outcomes.”
