Patient experience

sportsmed ranked nation’s number one hospital by Medibank members in 2018

The results were recorded from Medibank’s Patient Reported Experience Survey (PREMs) which collected information from its members who have had surgery and experienced an overnight stay in a hospital.

Since 2016, more than 30,000 members of Medibank — Australia’s largest health insurer — have completed the survey which focuses on areas such as staff interactions, treatment and care, and cleanliness of the hospital.

sportsmed received a score of 9.5/10 for all areas, alongside the 100% recommendation for its hospital. Just two other hospitals nationwide achieved the same rating.

Medibank Patient Experience Scores 2018

The survey information and patient feedback was made available to the public for the first time, via the Medibank website, on Wednesday, 14th November.

sportsmed Chief Executive Officer of Hospital and Orthopaedics Alan Morrison said he is delighted with the result and commended Medibank for the survey which provides patients with greater transparency and help when navigating the healthcare system.

“Our hospital’s result was remarkable and one that validates sportsmed’s purpose of providing the best patient care and experience, although it’s not something that surprises me as I am acutely aware of the amazing care provided by staff on a daily basis,” he said.

“The result is a great testament to the exceptional care and attention we provide to patients across all aspects of sportsmed, each and every day.

“Having this information in the public arena can only be a positive for sportsmed, but also a reminder that we must continue to fully focus our attention on patient centred care and build upon delivering the best possible patient experience.

“Medibank should be applauded for taking this position as it provides important information for patients, better empowering them to make informed decisions around where they would like to receive their care, filling some of the void in the community concerning where good value patient care is provided.”

Morrison also highlighted the impressive results across the nation for private hospitals with South Australia leading the way in providing Australians with the best possible patient experience.

“The data shows that private patients in private hospitals across most facilities are enjoying very good experiences and that the positive experiences across private hospitals are greater, on average, than private patients receiving treatment in a public hospital,” he said.

“It’s great to see so many Australians enjoying highly positive experiences in private hospitals with South Australian facilities proudly the biggest proponent of that success.

“I congratulate all private hospitals for continuing to deliver the highest level of healthcare and experience to Australians.”

Medibank has been working closely with private hospital groups and the University of Melbourne throughout the survey process to ensure the data is accurate and reflective of patient experience.

A staggering 95% of Medibank members surveyed rated their patient experience in a private hospital an 8/10 or higher.

With more Australians admitted to hospital than ever before, Medibank will continue to deliver the survey initiative with quarterly data updates to help patients make more informed decisions in the best interests of their health.
